The Lasting Power of Words
Throughout our lives there may be writings, orations or words overheard that shape our very existence. When I was a child I remember reading a wonderful poem by Dorothy Law Nolte, educator and speaker entitled “Children Live What They Learn”. At that time, I did not fully realize the lifelong impact those words would have on my life and my interactions with others.
In my adult years those highly resonating themes from Dorothy Law Note inspired me first to write “If We Advocate” and within the past decade “ If We Value” I periodically share both pieces on my personal social media, but I wanted to take this opportunity to share in on the website to hopefully reach, inspire and provide hope for a larger audience.

If We Advocate
By K. Octavian Young
If we advocate peace, we help to heal the world. If we advocate war, we have forgotten the lessons of history.
If we advocate love, we appreciate beauty in all its forms.
If we advocate hate, we diminish our evolution. If we advocate enlightenment, we sense the urgency of sharing wisdom. If we advocate ignorance, we fear the voice of reason.
If we advocate interdependence, we understand the importance of needing each other. If we advocate separatism, we fear losing our identity. If we advocate self-centeredness, we sever our nexus to society. If we advocate altruism, we become part of the solution. If we advocate compassion and sincerity, we hold the keys to the existence of humanity.
If We Value
By K. Octavian Young
If we value diversity, we acknowledge the importance and necessity of different perspectives and contributions.
If we value equity, we understand the need for all to have impartial access to resources and support.
If we value inclusion, we assure voices and experiences similar and dissimilar to our own are represented.
If we value belonging, we advocate for a sense of affinity and rapport for all.
If we value justice, we seek and pursue accountability regardless of privilege or status.
